Quality in Aviation and Defense: An Overview of AS9100, AQAP and NADCAP

The smallest error made in an aircraft part or a defense system component can have consequences too severe to measure. That is why the aviation, space and defense sectors have far stricter quality and traceability requirements — a distinct family of standards of their own — than other sectors.
At the center of this family is AS9100. This ISO 9001-based standard is extended with additional requirements specific to the aviation sector — such as risk management, configuration control and counterfeit part prevention. For organizations engaged in design and manufacturing, AS9100 is effectively a prerequisite for working with aviation main industries and OEMs. For organizations performing maintenance and repair (MRO), the AS9110 version comes into play, and for distributors and stockists, AS9120.
On the defense industry side, AQAP (NATO Quality Assurance Publications) stands out. Publications such as AQAP 2110, 2120 and 2310 define the quality assurance requirements that organizations wishing to supply NATO and defense industry prime contractors must meet.
Then there is NADCAP: a global program that ensures the independent accreditation of critical special processes in aviation and defense — such as heat treatment, welding, coating and non-destructive testing (NDT) — by expert assessors. Often mandated by major OEMs such as Boeing and Airbus, NADCAP is considered the highest-level trust mark in the aviation supply chain. Since a single NADCAP audit can be accepted by multiple customers, it also reduces the burden of repeated audits.
Most of these areas require special accreditation and in-depth expertise. As 2M Danışmanlık, in these requirements specific to the aviation and defense sector, we manage your preparation process from gap analysis to audit with our extensive network of experts who know the subject well.
