The automotive sector has one of the world's most demanding supply chains when it comes to quality. If you want to become a supplier to an automotive main industry, saying 'I produce a good product' is not enough; you must prove it with internationally accepted systems.
At the foundation of this proof lies the IATF 16949 Automotive Quality Management System. This global standard, which deepens the requirements of ISO 9001, is based on the zero-defect target, preventing defects and reducing waste in the supply chain. Almost all automotive main industries worldwide require this certificate from their suppliers — so IATF 16949 is effectively a prerequisite for entering the sector.
But it does not end there. German main industries in particular (VW, BMW, Mercedes, Bosch) require VDA audits. Within the VDA 6 series, the most frequently requested VDA 6.3 (process audit) measures your process maturity with a concrete scoring system. In addition, complementary VDA volumes, from document management to measurement system analysis, may come into play.
There is also the essential toolset the automotive sector calls 'Core Tools': APQP (advanced product quality planning), PPAP (production part approval process), FMEA (failure mode and effects analysis), MSA and SPC (measurement system analysis and statistical process control), and the 8D problem-solving method. These tools are the competence areas most frequently questioned in automotive customer audits.
To these are added CQI assessments for special processes such as heat treatment and coating, IMDS for material compliance, and the AdBlue® (ISO 22241) standard for diesel vehicles. In short, the automotive supply chain is a multi-layered field requiring in-depth expertise.
